Emergent Curriculum

Created in our classroom as we listen to the children and find out more about what they are interested in learning about. We listen to their ideas through free play, organized activities, and discussions and incorporate the ideas that emerge from the children’s interests into our curriculum. This allows us room to address the learning interests of the children in the class and shows them that their ideas are important and valuable. It also allows us room to incorporate learning opportunities in our classroom or community that present themselves.

Monthly themes

Allow children to learn about topics that may be different from their usual interests and expands their minds through exposure to different activities. The theme-based curriculum also helps prepare children for kindergarten by developing their listening skills, taking directions from teachers, and working with classmates.

Combining both

We present a learning environment that provides exposure to new ideas through introducing a variety of topics and activities while showing children that we value their interests, ideas, and natural passion for learning. In this learning environment children are valued in their unique stage of early childhood development by honoring their natural curiosity and love of learning through developing curriculum around their interests, while preparing them to succeed in school by presenting theme-based learning opportunities and fundamentals that provide structure and prepare them for kindergarten.

growth & values

We will continuously be working on development of social, emotional and intellectual growth as well as physical development of fine and gross motor skills. Compassion and the values of respect, honesty, safety, and responsibility will be taught and modeled throughout all aspects of our program.

Making connections

Whenever possible we try to connect what children are learning to their lives. When there is meaning to what children are learning they are more likely to maintain interested and to retain what they have learned. Connections will be made through field trips, discussions, hands-on learning, and by connecting learning to the individual children and their families. Whenever possible parents/ guardians are encouraged to visit the classroom, volunteer, or share connections they see between school and home with their child’s teacher and with their children.
